‘Waste of food, money and time’

It’s summer, so you know what that means: pretty much nothing because we are in the middle of a pandemic.

If we were not, however, we’d be hanging out by the pool, at a cookout or at a bar with our friends standing closer than six feet apart. Any of those activities sounds idyllic right now, and there’s only one thing that can elevate those classic summer pastimes — a glizzy.

A glizzy is a hot dog. It was originally a slang term for “gun” in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area (also known as the DMV), but according to HipHop DX, it became a nickname for hot dogs because the length of the barbecue staple is similar to the extended clip of a gun.

As the silly new word has started to spread across the nation, TikTok users have taken to adding hot dogs to their videos in the weirdest possible ways — perhaps solely so they can say the word “glizzy,” which is objectively fun. Again, people can’t really leave the house right now. We’re desperate.

One TikTok user created a “glizzy dispenser,” which is just a refrigerator ice machine that releases hot dogs into your cup instead of frozen water. I don’t know how it works, though I don’t want to and I don’t think you do, either.

A different user created a “glizzy garden” in their yard by putting dozens of hot dogs on sticks throughout the grass.

This one faced quite a bit of backlash from commenters.

“Waste of food, money and time,” one user wrote.

“This is a waste of hot dogs. People are hungry in the world!!!!” another said.

“Imagine the smell and how many animals would show up,” a third remarked.

Yet another trend has TikTokers hiding the fact that they enjoy eating hot dogs, or “glizzy gobbling.” One user shared a series of techniques one can use to avoid getting caught in public.

Like so many trends on the internet, this one is vastly inexplicable. At least we’ve found a new nickname for one of our favorite foods.
