Owner of major Broadway theaters sues insurance companies over coronavirus payouts

Broadway theater owner Jujamcyn Theaters is suing its insurance companies, Federal Insurance Company and Pacific Indemnity Company, for paying merely $250,000 to cover what the company claims should be “tens of millions of dollars” in coronavirus-related losses.

The lawsuit, filed with the Southern District of New York, alleges that Federal Insurance Company “flatly denied coverage, refusing to pay even a penny to help Jujamcyn” while Pacific Indemnity paid the company $250,000, a fraction of what it claims it should’ve been paid under its insurance policy.

“Federal and Pacific knew, and publicly acknowledged, that they could be obligated to pay for massive losses in the event of a pandemic. Federal and Pacific also knew that they could use common and widely available exclusions to guard against being obligated to pay for pandemic-associated losses,” Jujamcyn said in the lawsuit. “However, they decided not to

Drones help insurance companies check damage in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Insurance adjusters who descended on Cedar Rapids after the Aug. 10 derecho storm are using drones to check roofs and asking homeowners with less severe damage to take their own photos.

Some of this is due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reduced the number of experienced adjusters willing to travel. But the changes also help speed up claims and get repairs done sooner, company representatives said.

“Drones or aerial imaging helps them estimate the claims,” said Scott Hauptman, vice president for claims for Grange Insurance, of Columbus, Ohio, which is working with Integrity Insurance, of Appleton, Wis., to handle at least 500 storm-related claims in Cedar Rapids. “It’s as efficient as possible and helps them (adjusters) safeguard their health.”

Cedar Rapids officials told The Gazette on Wednesday that 140 buildings are too damaged to be occupied. Several hundred more have non-structural or cosmetic damage.

Following on the heels of dozens that have already been filed across the country, three potential class-action lawsuits related to covid-19 were filed in federal court in Pittsburgh late this week.

All three complaints were filed against insurance companies alleging that they failed to cover claims for losses their customers sustained because of government-ordered shutdowns during the pandemic.

In one complaint filed in U.S. District Court, James and Jessica McMenamin Jr., of Butler County, are suing Arch Insurance Co. and Arch Insurance Solutions Inc. for failing to cover their losses for a trip that was canceled.

The couple booked tickets on Jan. 23 to travel from Pittsburgh to London, and then for a vacation tour from London to Rome, departing June 18 and returning 10 days later. They booked their travel
